lew. people are asking about all the riders and ting. what of teh sentais? other than TVN where do get older shows?
I’m glad you asked, Michael my chum! There are quite a few groups out there who have been busy at finishing up earlier Super Sentai series to get things out to the populace!
Aside from TV-Nihon, who have been going at the franchise since 2004’s Tokusou Sentai Dekaranger, there are some other groups which are definitely worth a mention!
Grown Ups In Spandex (GUIS): Though their English skills may be wonky at times, these guys have managed to give us full subs for the beloved 1988 series Choujyu Sentai Liveman, and they’re also on their way to working on a new set of subs for the fan favorite 1991 Sentai Series Choujin Sentai Jetman! The Jetman subs are also bilingual: There’s a Spanish track AND an English track! I will say that the English track shows many signs of being a Japanese-to-Spanish-to-English translation, but it’s serviceable and editable if you wish. Plus it’s better than a certain group that “subbed” the series a few years back, and which won’t be named….
Hi no Tori: Another slightly wonky group. They focus on older Tokusatsu series (they also were the ones who subbed Kamen Rider Amazon completely). Though some of their translations are also kinda rough, they put effort into their shows for sure! They’re about halfway through 1998’s Seijyu Sentai Gingaman (which was adapted for Power Rangers: Lost Galaxy for you PR fans), and they’re also working on a few Ultraman series, such as Ultraseven and Ultraman Neos, for those curious! :> They’re a very, very, very very slow group, though, so just be warned that new episodes take months to get up there for some reason.
Hikari Senshi: These guys are a slightly newer group, but the things they’ve been putting out are fantastic! They recently released the entire 1993 series Gosei Sentai Dairanger (source for the robots, monsters, and the White Ranger costume from MMPR season 2) with softsubs in one fell swoop, which amazed just about everyone, and the translations are quite good (if not a tad bit too literal in some cases, but eh, beggars can’t be choosers and the whole thing is really well done!) They’re also getting to work on 1994’s Ninja Sentai Kakuranger (the basis for MMPR season 3 and Mighty Morphin’ Alien Rangers) and 1999’s Kyukyu Sentai GoGo Five (basis for Power Rangers Lightspeed Rescue…but while i’ve heard LR isn’t very good, GGV is awesome), and they’re resubbing 2006’s Gogo Sentai Boukenger (basis for Power Rangers Operation Overdrive…only it doesn’t absolutely suck beyond belief, I swear, Bouken is cool I mean it) AND 1982’s Dai Sentai Goggle V! They’re really going all out, and they’re a nice bunch!
Midnight Crew Subs: Though mainly working on both Kamen Rider Stronger (and better subs for Kabuto and Den-O) and in a joint effort with Hikari Senshi are subbing the 1992 Brave series Brave Fighter of Legend Da-Garn, they’re also slowly providing proper (read: Non HK-bootleg) subs of 2003’s Bakuryu Sentai Abaranger (Power Rangers Dino Thunder’s source material), a personal favorite! Abare has been slow-going, but they’re getting there!
GaoSoulForever: These guys are really just great. They not only cranked out the entire series, and the movies and even the obscure Terebi-kun magazine bonus VHS short for 2001’s Hyakujyu Sentai Gaoranger (Power Rangers Wild Force basis), but they also just recently completed subbing 1981’s Taiyou Sentai Sun Vulcan (which seems to be a fan favorite over in Japan, judging by how much it is referenced, parodied, and paid homage in a bunch of other shows and comics and fanart). They’ve amazed us all with the effort they show and the determination they put in, combined with solid translations and efforts. While I’m pretty sure their Gao subs are only hardsubs, I know Sun Vulcan is both available in hardsubs and softsubs! Both use DVD rips for great quality though. uvu.
MegaAnon: Originally working as a softscrubbing group for TVN’s subs of 1997’s Denji Sentai Megaranger (Power Rangers in Space), which then made TVN pull one of their stunts by suddenly jumping on the project again when they noticed DUR HEY SOMEONE ELSE IS SUBBING A SHOW WE MADE PEOPLE DONATE TO GET THE DVDS FOR, AND THEN TOTALLY SAT ON FOR YEARS, LET’S GET IT DONE FIRST AND ACT LIKE IT’S JUST A COINCIDENCE , MegaAnon has been softsubbing the series, and also has begun working with GUIS to provide softsubs for the one series that US audiences always clamor for: 1992’s Kyoryu Sentai Zyuranger (which was used for, you guessed it, season 1 of Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers). MA’s a cool dude!
ShinkenAnon has been busy scrubbing and fixing up the subs for another fan favorite in recent years: 2009’s Samurai Sentai Shinkenger (Power Rangers Samurai/Super Samurai). They’re definitely worth looking at, especially since Shinken is a deeply Japanese show and…well…TVN’s subs…er…they didn’t help make sense of stuff, I guess you could say.
Go-Anonger : God bless this poor soul, they managed to scrub and, at times, better adapt the humor of one of the most pun-riddled and wordplay loving series of them all: 2008’s Engine Sentai Go-Onger (Power Rangers RPM…but you’ll see just how different the two shows are from each other if you watch Go-on.) But props to them! They got it all done!
HaroRangers: They’re a group known for doing a bunch of stuff, including J-Dramas, but they’ve also been working on 1996’s hilarious Gekisou Sentai Carranger (Power Rangers Turbo, but, again, pretty different in tone, with Carranger’s love of slapstick giving the Turbo staff trouble BUT eh, I love Carranger) and 2002’s Ninpuu Sentai Hurricaneger (Power Rangers Ninja Storm.) They’re also slowly progressing, but they’re gettin’ there!
Over-Time: Yep, just like before, these guys are also really good for some more recent Super Sentai works. They fully subbed all of 2011’s Kaizoku Sentai Gokaiger, and they’re also working on this year’s series, Tokumei Sentai Go-Busters. They’re also in a joint project (last time I checked) with SuperHeroTime to sub 2000’s (surprisingly dark, yet very well written) Mirai Sentai Timeranger! Not to mention, they’re working on the currently running Hikounin Sentai Akibaranger, Toei’s “Unofficial” Sentai series made aimed at adult fans of the franchise. It’s both incredibly funny and incredibly accurate in its jabs at Sentai otaku and the district of Akihabara, and it’s totally worth watching, too!
SuperHeroTime: They’ve kinda been hush-hush lately (they also are based out of tumblr!) But they’re also the ones to turn to for subs of 1979’s Battle Fever J, and also announced that they’ll be working on 1985’s Dengeki Sentai Changeman (an iconic series for Brazil in particular, yes seriously) and they’re working with OT to do Timeranger, as I mentioned before!
OMFG: A group which I really, really hope gets back up off teh ground soon. They’ve been quiet lately and haven’t updated recently, but they’ve put out the first 8 episodes (and I hope more) of 1995’s Choriki Sentai Ohranger (Power Rangers Zeo). While I said I wouldn’t mention dead groups, I dunno the status on them…and I just am plugging them because they did at least enough of Ohre to salivate one’s appetite.
There are probably some folks I forgot, and i didn’t include groups who have died out or only posted one or two episodes of a series (such as Evolution Fansubs and their release of episodes 1 and 2 of Kousoku Sentai Turboranger) but hopefully this will help folks! Super Sentai arguably doesn’t get as much love around here as Kamen Rider, and even though I love both franchises equally, I like giving SS some shameless plugging now and then. uvu
…This works better than it should. I almost forgot about Seiku-Oh until I saw this ;-;

(Dear Rangerboard: You can finally shut up about Power Rangers references in a(n Unofficial) Sentai Series. Sincerely: The rest of the internet.)
